Seasons Mosaic- Actaeon

Seasons Mosaic- Actaeon

Image of Seasons Mosaic- Actaeon

Description
This medallion from the Seasons mosaic lies to the right of the central medallion and depicts Actaeon being attacked by two collared dogs. While out hunting, Actaeon accidentally caught sight of the goddess Diana bathing naked. In outrage she turned him into a stag, whereupon he was torn apart by hounds. Representations of Actaeon's metamorphosis into a stag are commonly paired with a scene of the bathing Diana. We can therefore speculate that she might have been the subject of the missing compartment on the opposite side of the mosaic.
