Make your own pop-up Roman garden at this creative event inspired by Roman gardens. The Romans loved gardens, and they planted them for use and for pleasure. Wealthy Romans had enclosed gardens for use as outdoor rooms, surrounded by colonnades and furnished with statues and fountains. Join us to colour, cut and construct your own miniature Roman garden.

Make your own collaged Green Man face, using cut and coloured leaves, and natural greenery. The Green Man, or Jack-in-the-Green, is a symbol of rebirth. He may once have been a pagan fertility figure or nature spirit, but he is found carved in Christian churches as far back as the fifth century. Making your own version of his face is a good way to celebrate the summer holidays.

Make your own Anglo-Saxon Shield at this exciting and arty drop-in event. The main defensive item of the Anglo-Saxon warrior was the shield. The Anglo-Saxon shield was made from wood and covered with leather or heavy cloth, with an iron boss in the centre. Some of the shields were beautifully decorated with ornate metal foils and studs or by painting. Create your own design and be just like an Anglo-Saxon warrior.

Mini Mosaics

Join us for a morning of mosaic making. We will explore the museum looking for inspiration from the museum’s Roman mosaic collections. During this morning workshop you will create a mosaic tile to take home using colourful, safe glass tiles. All materials and instruction provided. Suitable for ages 8 and above. Please enquire about younger children as there is quite a lot of supervision required for children under 8.

Hunting Dogs Mosaics

Drop in to this Handling Session and take an up close look at real Roman objects. Learn more about the engineering, decoration and artefacts that made up Roman homes in Corinium. The earliest houses in Corinium were timber framed structures, with tiled or thatched roofs. The internal walls were plastered and some decorated with wall paintings. The floors were usually brick-mortar (opus signinum) although some houses had mosaic pavements. By the middle of the 2nd century many of these houses…

Create a Roman soldier on a stick inspired by the Roman army and the kit they carried. Roman soldiers had very special armour and weapons that included a spear, a gladius (sword), a pugio (dagger), a helmet and a shield. Make your own Roman soldier on a stick at this fun art activity. March your soldier out of the museum and take him home.

Viking Sun Compasses

This fun morning drop-in will provide you with the tools to create your own Roman shield. Shields were often curved to protect the soldier’s body and brightly decorated with special designs to show power. Designs included eagles, lightening bolts and laurel wreaths. Create your own to take home.
