Gold coin

Image of Gold coin

Description
A late Iron Age gold coin, or stater, depicting a triple-tailed horse. The area around Lechlade and Fairford seems to have been used for large-scale horse-rearing prior to the Roman invasion. The triple-tailed horse appears to be the symbol of the local tribe, the Dobunni. The writing on the reverse would have fully spelt “BODVOC”, the name of the local king, however the die was misaligned so the full text was not transferred. The coin is highly likely to have been minted at Bagendon, the Hill Fort occupied by the Dobunni before the Roman invasion. The text on the coin is a very Roman trademark, showing that the tribesmen were in contact with the Romans and started to adopt some of their customs before the Romans fully settled post 43AD.
