Mosaic HARE by artist Emma Abel

Creating a 7ft Roman themed Hare is something Emma Abel is embarking upon, as part of the Hares of Hampshire summer trail 2022.

Between February and April she has been leaping around the studio mosaicing LEPUS Roman hare – a fundraiser for emergency paediatric equipment at Southampton hospital.

LEPUS will be 1 of 30 hares hopping around the streets of Winchester between June and August this summer, followed by a Grand Auction in September! Using unglazed tiles in typical Roman colours, LEPUS features the Guilloche (braided) and Scroll Roman designs amongst others.

She says, ‘I’m about halfway at the moment, clocking up around 200 hours… but I’m a hoptimist so LEPUS will be fully dressed and bouncing into action in June! Did you know that the Romans introduced hares to Britain?’

Emma’s hare will look spectacular when finished. A wonderful tribute to the beauty and detail of Roman mosaic art.
