Roman Army (Latin: exercitus Romanus)
A Roman soldier was a well-trained fighting machine. Soldiers were often expected to march 20 miles a day, wearing all armour and carrying equipment. After a long day, Roman soldiers had to build a camp, complete with a ditch and a wall of wooden stakes. The next day, they had to do it all again! Roman legionaries were the elite fighting force. Auxiliaries were troops who gave support to the main Roman army.
