- Description
- Iron shield boss and grip, found in grave 92 during excavations at an Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Butler's Field, Lechlade, Gloucestershire, in 1985. The grave belonged to a young man aged between 16 and 18 years old. He was buried sometime between 475AD and 550AD, with a shield, two spears, a knife and a cauldron. Archaeologists only found evidence of two people buried in wooden coffins at Butler’s Field, signalling that he was probably very important or wealthy. Other graves at the cemetery were stone-lined or cut into the bedrock.
