Weston-sub-Edge Coin Hoard

Back in 1981, a special coin hoard was found in the Hall of Friendship at Weston Sub Edge. A few years later, it arrived at the Corinium Museum. That was nearly 40 years ago!

The discovery was a nationally important Civil War coin hoard hidden in a length of lead piping. The Coroner’s Inquest ruled the hoard to be ‘treasure trove’ and was eventually purchased and put on display at Corinium Museum together with the lead pipe and an ancient note, both kindly donated by the Trustees of the Hall of Friendship.

One person involved in identifying the coin hoard was Roger Box, a Police Officer at that time, with a specialist knowledge of ancient coins. Join Roger to hear about the part he played in the discovery and the stories behind the Royal figures on the coins. The date of the latest coin was 1642, the year that saw the start of the Civil War. Was the hoard hidden to protect the wealth of somebody who was concerned that the coming war would see their wealth confiscated or was it hidden for another reason? Unfortunately, whatever the reason, the owner never returned to collect it.
