Fertility
The hare is associated with fertility in Roman symbolism. This is one of many hare representations in Roman Britain. It is an unusual representation as it is pictured nibbling a shrub opposed to being in a hunting scene. Also note there is a small line of glass tesserae highlighting the hare’s back.
