- Description
- This fourth century AD mosaic was found in excavations at Beeches Road, Cirencester in 1971. It is one of the most attractive and accomplished animals depicted in a Romano-British mosaic. Note the use of clear glass tesserae to highlight the fur on the creature's back. Hares were shown in other Romano-British mosaics, but the instances are few and most of them appear in hunting scenes. The Beeches Road hare is unique among Romano-British mosaics in showing the animal feeding.
