Description
Stone altar dedicated to the Genius Loci, 'Spirit of the Place'. The Genius wears a crown and holds a double cornucopia in his left hand. In his right hand he holds a 'patera', a sacrificial bowl extended over an altar. The inscription reads G(enio) S(ancto) HVI(V)S LOC(I) and can be translated as 'To the holy Genius of this place'. The hollow on the top of the altar is where sacrifices, to bring fertility to the place and prosperity to the people, would have been offered. The remainder of the inscription with the name of the dedicator was presumably shown below the relief and has been lost.
