- Description
- This famous graffito is scratched on to the surface of a piece of 2nd century wall plaster. Found during excavations of a Roman house in Victoria Road, Cirencester in 1868. The inscription reads: ROTAS OPERA TENET AREPO SATOR It is generally believed to be a secret Christian code, dating from a period of persecution, although some consider it to be nothing more than a clever word game.
