Brooch (square headed)

Image of Brooch (square headed)

Description
Bronze cast square-headed brooch, found in grave 18 during excavations at an Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Butler's Field, Lechlade, Gloucestershire, in 1985. This is arguably the singular most important object found at the Butler’s Field excavation. It is beautifully decorated with zoomorphic designs. Only one of these objects tends to be found in a graveyard, showing that the owner was of high status. There is a belief that the women who owned these were related to Danish royalty, as these seem to have been handed out when Danish kings went on tours of Britain. This also dates the grave to the middle to late 5th century and would perhaps have been the grave of one of the first settlers during the Anglo-Saxon period.
