- Description
- Fragment from a third century AD mosaic found in the excavations at Admiral's Walk, St Michael's Field, Cirencester in 1974. The cantharus (a Roman two-handled drinking cup) in the centre has a triangular shape above, which is unusual. This has been interpreted as a lid, but such vessels were not usually lidded. It might represent a stylised jet of water as Roman fountains sometimes took the shape of a cantharus.
