- Description
- A rare gold aureus of the Emperor Carausius. The obverse bears a rather thug-like portrait of the Emperor, which was presumably how he wished to be seen. He was emperor from 287 to 293AD. He had the nickname “Emperor of the North” since he was only seen as Emperor within Britain and Gaul, separating them from the rest of the Roman Empire. This coin was probably minted in Londinium.
