Duntisbourne Hoard
Background
In 2021, a metal detectorist discovered a hoard of Iron Age silver coins buried alongside tiny votive objects. The finds were reported through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and formally declared Treasure in 2022. The site was then formally excavated by Prof. Mark Horton of the Royal Agricultural University.
The hoard includes Iron Age silver coins and a collection of miniature votive artefacts —tiny symbolic shields and spearheads made of copper-alloy and iron. A small number of early Roman bronze coins were also found nearby, reflecting later activity. Although initially recorded in two separate groups, the Iron Age material likely represents a single hoard, buried in the late 1st century BC or early 1st century AD and later disturbed. The coins and votive objects were found mainly in a post-hole pit, originally dug for a roundhouse building post, suggesting deliberate deposition, probably in a bag or bundle.
Appeal
This is a regionally important hoard and will become the museum’s only Iron Age coin hoard, providing a unique insight into Iron Age life in the Cotswolds, near Corinium. Visitors will be captivated by the miniature votive objects and the distinctive Dobunnic coin designs are playful, abstract, and symbolic, contrasting with the formal style of Roman coins and conveying ideas about Iron Age identity, belief, and power. Please help us conserve and display this important find. There are over 100 coins and 8 votives.
