The Corinium Museum contains fine examples of Samian ware (Terra sigillata) in its collection. How did the 1st century garrison’s Samian supply reach the Roman fort -and what became of it?

Dr Graham J. Barton was born in Cheshire and studied Economics at Aberystwyth University, graduating in 1974.  He came to Gloucestershire in 1982 to join the teaching staff at GlosCAT and following the reorganisation of further and higher education in the county during the following decade Graham was appointed as principal lecturer in Business Management at the University of Gloucestershire.

Graham’s involvement in archaeology began in 1972 when he took part in the excavation of the Iron Age farmstead at Gussage all Saints (Dorset).  In 1974 he joined Professor Cunliffe’s digging team and over the next 35 years Graham spent many of his college vacations excavating with Sir Barry at sites such as Danebury (Hampshire), the Temple of Sulis Minerva (Bath) and Brading Roman Villa (Isle of Wight).

Retirement in 2007 provided Graham with the opportunity to complete his doctoral thesis, which examined the role of supply chains in the development of cross-Channel exchange in the Romano-British.

Graham became BGAS Honorary General Secretary in 2018 and was elected as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2022.
