Gold pendant

Image of Gold pendant

Description
This rare and beautiful gold disc pendant set with garnets was found in grave 95/1 during excavations at an Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Butler's Field, Lechlade, Gloucestershire, in 1985. It displays Christian iconography with the cross and the red garnets that represent the blood of Christ. The garnets likely travelled from Sri Lanka, demonstrating the great trade routes at this time. One of the edges is worn away, which tells us that the object was actually worn and not just for display.
