We have a huge selection of exciting events for families coming up this October half term! Whether you join us for a special holiday trail around the museum to win a prize, make a Monster Maraca or watch our family film, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Roman Pots Family Drop-in & Discovery Zone

Saturday 21 October, 10-11am

Learn about Roman pottery and how it was used through examining real Roman pot shards and handling replica pots. Then decorate your own pot on paper and assemble the mock pieces as an archaeologist would do.

Cost: £2.50 per child, £1.50 for season ticket holders
Suitable for ages 5 and above

 

Mythical Masks Family Drop-in & Discovery Zone

Saturday 21 October, 11-12pm

Learn about Roman myths through stories and objects. Create your own mask based on a character from Roman myth and legend and put it on for a fantastical photo.

Cost: £2.50 per child, £1.50 for season ticket holders
Suitable for ages 5 and above

 

Monster Maracas Children’s Workshop

Saturday 21 October, 2-3pm          

Musical instruments have been used for thousands of years. Create your own maraca and decorate it inspired by the beasts and creatures from myths and legends gone by.

Egyptian Mummy Peg Doll

Egyptian Mummy Peg Dolls Children’s Workshop

Monday 23 October, 10.30-11.30am

No need to keep this activity under wraps! Let’s celebrate the season with a friendly and historical ghoul. These adorable Egyptian peg dolls will delight and entertain, and don’t forget to bring your mummy!

UNPLUGGED

‘Unplugged’ and ‘When I Grow Up’

Special Family Event with Steve Antony (author and illustrator)

Tuesday 24 October, 10.30-12pm

Children’s author Steve Antony visits the museum to celebrate the launch of his new books ‘Unplugged’ about enjoying outdoors and ‘When I Grow Up’ which is from Matilda the Musical, written by Tim Minchin. Join Steve for an interactive reading of his books and create ‘story stones’ whilst learning how to write and illustrate a great story. Take time to look around the museum for inspiration if you wish.

Waterstones will be selling copies of Steve’s books and he will be happy to sign books after the event.

Incredible Insects workshop

Incredible Insects Children’s Workshop

Wednesday 25 October, 10-1pm

A wonderful opportunity for young insect fans to get up close and personal with incredible insects. Using high powered microscopes, you will see and draw insects like you never have before; from the wing of a butterfly to the eye of a ladybird.

All expert tuition and information provided.

Be a Medieval Monk Children’s Workshop

Thursday 26 October, 10.30-12pm

How did monks at Cirencester Abbey live 900 years ago? This workshop recreates a monastic day in miniature. Wear a monk’s habit, make a manuscript to take home, learn about medieval saints, herb gardens & medicine, and pray like it’s 1117.

Tombstones Discovery Zone

Thursday 26 October, 11-12.30pm

Come and be an archaeologist! Learn to decode the Museums Roman tombstone inscriptions including the recently discovered Bodicacia tombstone. Have a go at using the Roman alphabet to write your own name.
